Two-component solvent-free clear epoxy resin: primer & coat for thick-bed systems

Uses

EPONAL 321 is a two-component solvent-free clear epoxy resin used as :

  • a primer or a main coat in multi-layer thick-bed flooring system (3 to 5mm thick) for high traffic applications (production areas, warehouses, high traffic areas, laboratories, etc.)
  • a repair mortar: float-applied repair mortar for damaged concrete substrate or liquid mortar for crack bridging
  • a tile grout in industrial applications

Benefits

  • Product being a part of the system under NF EN 13813 standard
  • Solvent-free
  • No shrinkage
  • Excellent adhesion to most substrates including concrete, ceramic tiles, metal, brick, stone and timber
  • Excellent mechanical and chemical resistance
  • Easy application
  • For repair mortars can be mixed with sharp sand (up to 1:12 by weight)
  • European fire classiciation: Bfl-s1

Application

Application conditions
Working temperature: + 10° to + 25°C
Maximum relative humidity: 80%
During application and cure, substrate temperature must always be at least 3°C above the dew point temperature.

PREPARATION
Preparation should be in accordance with building standards. Concrete subfloors must be clean, sound, dry (relative humidity <4%), of adequate compressive and tensile strength (at least 25 MPa and 1,5 MPa respectively after 28 days cure for new concrete) and not subject to hydrostatic pressure. They must be free from laitance, cracks and structural defects; clean and free from dust, grease, curing compounds, sealers or any other contaminants that would inhibit proper bond. Depending on subfloor condition and type, subfloors are treated by grit blasting, mechanical planing, scabbing, sandblasting, high pressure water washing or chemical stripping. After mechanical treatment of a subfloor, thoroughly vacuum all dust.

PRODUCT MIXING

- EPONAL 321 Primer
Add the hardener into resin (parts A + B) while mixing, mix thoroughly for 2 to 3 minutes with an electric drill and mixing paddle (speed: not more than 300 rpm in order to avoid air bubbles inclusion).

- EPONAL 321 Mortar mixed with F208/1 sand
Add the hardener into resin (parts A + B) while mixing, mix thoroughly for 2 to 3 minutes with an electric drill and mixing paddle (speed: not more than 300 rpm in order to avoid air bubbles inclusion). Then add F208/1 sharp sand  (particle size 0.1-0.9mm), mixing ratio: EPONAL 321 blend =1kg  :  F208/1 sand=1 kg.

SYSTEMS

- Primer
Apply a coat of EPONAL 321 on a dry subfloor using a roller or or a notched trowel  n°3 B2 at a rate of 300-400gsm.

EPONAL 326 Multi-layer system
- First main coat
On a dry substrate (1) apply a coat of EPONAL 321 mortar using a float or a squeegee at a rate of 2kg/m², then broadcast sand (particle size 0.4-0.9mm) abundantly at a rate of 2.5-3kg/m² onto still wet mortar.

- Second main coat
After the first main coat has cured, thorougly remove excess of sand, apply the second coat of EPONAL 321 mortar using a float or a squeegee at a rate of 2kg/m², then broadcast sand (particle size 0.4-0.9mm) or coloured quartz sand (particle size 0.3-0.8mm) abundantly at a rate of 2.5-3kg/m² onto still wet mortar.

- Finishing coat
After the second coat has cured, thorougly remove excess of sand, apply a clear or coloured coat of EPONAL 326 using a float or a squeegee at a rate of 300-600 g/m².

(1) on damp substrate not subject to water seepage apply one coat of EPONAL 376 mortar (mixing ratio: 1 kg of EPONAL 376 blend : 1 kg of F208/1 sand).

Float-applied EPONAL 321 mortar

Apply EPONAL 321 primer with a roller or a brush at a rate of 300-400g/m².  Then apply onto a tacky primer (i.e. after 1 hour at 20°C)  EPONAL 321  blend (A+B) mixed with sharp sand (mixing ratio: 1 part of EPONAL 321 blend to 5 to 12 parts of sharp sand (particle size: 0.1 to 0.5mm) depending on the required use).

Tile Grout
Mix 1 part of EPONAL 321 blend (A+B) with 7 parts of sharp sand (0.2 to 0.5mm ). Apply the mixture with a trowel. Immediately wipe off the tiles after applying epoxy grout mortar.
